Vince is a 24 year old American living in Paris and trying to become an actor. His bad accent in French is making him fail all his auditions. Nevertheless, a couple of things keep him going: work as a tourist guide of famous film locations and a small part in an obscure "avant-garde" theater play. One day he meets Zoe, a 23 year old French student. A romance blossoms despite the clash of cultures and different lifestyles. Vince constantly surprises Zoe with his life philosophy as does Zoe with French cultural particularities.
Meanwhile in the States, Vince's mother Theresa tries everything to reconcile Vince with his father Malcolm. They haven't spoken for three years. As luck would have it, Vince's mother manages to speak with Zoe. She arranges a meeting between Zoe and Malcolm without Vince's knowledge. After that meeting Malcolm waits in a bar for Vince. The first contact is very strained. The tension is felt in the air. They reproach each other every thing they've been hiding for three years. After the pressure of the first contact is over, Malcolm tells Vince that he was very happy to meet Zoe and to learn about her pregnancy.
Vince's world collapses. He feels betrayed by Zoe, by his father and by the whole world. He sees schemes everywhere. On top of that, his theatre show gets temporarily canceled. After a huge fight with Zoe he spends the night walking on the streets of Paris. The next morning, on his way to meet his father, he stops for an audition. For the first time a director is satisfied with his accent. Even more so, he considers it an advantage and is ready to offer Vince a chance. He also wants to meet Zoe, but Vince knows that she doesn't want to see him right now. In reality. But in the film?

Director's statement:

When I came to Paris in 2003, I didn't speak a word of French. During my first two years this didn't change much and I was also constantly without money. Because of all that I was a very, very nervous person. A complete outsider. I felt like I'm not even alive. Making this movie in that period was my raison d'etre, an attempt to exist in society without really being able to be part of it, a desperate cry for integration. I put into it everything I had at the time: my pure admiration of Paris, city of love and cinema.
